Before you ask
Count the Cost
“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”
Read this before you ask to come in. If you decide it is not your season, that is a good outcome and nobody will think less of you for it. A man who counts and declines has done the thing this passage asks. A man who joins without counting has not.
What this is
Training. Not a Bible study, not a men's group, not a conference you attend. Twenty-two cycles across roughly two years, a coach who will come to know your patterns, a squad of five to eight men, and a daily rhythm you are held to. Year two runs the same ground at higher altitude.
Most of it is not structured. Business decisions, marriage, parenting, conflict, temptation, money, interruptions — the objective is not to detach you from your responsibilities but to change how you inhabit them. Life is the training ground.
The order is fixed: son, then servant, then soldier. A son receives. A servant stoops. A soldier obeys. Before Christ ministered, the Father declared His pleasure in Him. A man who forgets this turns training into religious performance, and the training will make him worse rather than better.
What it will cost you
- Time, daily
- A log every day. It is built to take under a minute and it is not optional. Three prayer calls a week is the floor, not the target. A weekly huddle. A weekly written reflection.
- Exposure
- You will name three areas you want to grow, and what stands in the way, plainly and without euphemism — and you will speak them before your squad at Covenant Day. You will name a Close Witness, someone who sees you unguarded, and we will ask them how you are doing. You will fill in a health profile. You will score yourself on twelve points and your coach will see the shape.
- Obedience you did not choose
- Each cycle carries an assignment. One of them is hidden — between you and God, and this system will only ever record that you did it, never what it was.
- Being known by one man
- Your coach will read your daily logs, your drift entries, your growth areas, your health profile. He will see when you go quiet. This is the point, and it is the part most men underestimate.
- Money, a little
- Everything the programme produces is free. Books you buy yourself.
What it will not cost you
- Your church
- This is not a replacement for your local congregation and it will not become one. If it starts competing, tell your coach.
- Your family
- Every man has a Jerusalem, and it is his own household. A man who is impressive here and absent at home has failed the training, whatever his logs say. If this begins to take you from your wife or your children, that is a fault in how you are running it and we will change it.
- Your standing before God
- Nothing here is earned. We fight from acceptance, never for acceptance.
What is asked of you daily
Whether you rose before dawn and met with Him. Whether you joined the prayer call. Green, yellow or red — where you actually stand today. Whether you exercised, and whether you studied. Where you said no to the flesh, and where you obeyed a prompt of the Spirit.
And drift, logged in the moment rather than at night — what pulled, what came just before it, and whether you caught it.
On your Sabbath, all of it is suppressed but one question: did you keep it.
Who reads what
This is the part to read twice.
- Your coach reads your record because you grant it
- Not because he outranks you. At Covenant Day a grant is created giving him read access. It is a grant — you agreed to it, and you can withdraw it.
- If you withdraw it, he is told
- Nothing is taken back secretly. He will not be shown what you wrote; he will be shown that access ended. Understand what withdrawal means before you use it: with it gone, the coaching and the safety protocol cannot work for you, and your coach will say so.
- Sealed is sealed
- Any journal entry you mark sealed is readable by you and by nobody — no coach, no head coach, no administrator, no future feature. If you flag a sealed entry as needing eyes, your coach is told that one exists and its date. He is never shown a word of it. He will come and ask you.
- What is confessed among brothers stays among brothers
- There are three exceptions and they are written down before they are ever needed: danger to your life, protection of someone vulnerable, and the law.
- Your health profile
- Read by you, your coach and the head coach. Not your squad. Not an administrator. You are the only one who can write it.
- What your Close Witness tells us is not shown to you
- If your wife or your witness raises a concern, it goes to your coach, and if it is a safety concern it goes further. It does not come back to you as a report. That rule exists to protect people who would otherwise not speak.
- Nobody is ranked
- There is no leaderboard, no score against another man, no squad average, anywhere, ever. The scoreboard measures training, not righteousness.
The grace terms — how you may leave
Read aloud at Covenant Day, and written here so that you know before you begin.
- You may stop
- Pause or step out, at any time, and say so out loud to your coach rather than disappearing. Paused and released are states a man is in, not punishments — nobody is deleted, and a released man is released with blessing and welcomed back.
- Falling is not leaving
- Fall quickly, repent quickly, rise immediately. The programme assumes you will fall. It is built for it.
- You will not be shamed out
- If you are asked to step back it will be to your face, with a reason, and with a way back.
- Your record stays yours
- If you leave, it is retained and frozen, and you can ask for a copy.
The supreme test
If this training makes us more impressed with ourselves, we are failing.
Intensity is not the goal. Discipline is not the goal. Brotherhood is not the goal. Authority is not the goal. Jesus is.
We fight from acceptance, never for acceptance. Nothing you do here earns you anything with God. You are already His, and everything in these two years is aimed at getting you out of the way so Christ can move through you.
What we are asking you to decide
Not whether you are ready. Nobody is.
Whether you will be honest, daily, for two years, with one man who will not let it go.
If that is a yes, ask. A coach will talk with you before anything begins, and he may tell you it is not your season — that is not a rejection, it is the first piece of coaching you will get.
Send this to your wife, your witness, or a friend — the people who will carry it with you should read it before you decide.
Every instrument you will be asked to fill in is explained in full on what we ask— what it asks, why, and who reads it. Also without signing up.
